“I think I still killed the footballer in me” – Kombarov, coach of Spartak-2

Russian champion and head coach of Spartak-2 Dmitry Kombarov said in an interview with that he quickly adapted to the second team of “red and white”, now we can say that he managed to kill the footballer in himself.

Kombarov took over as director of the relaunched Spartak-2 on January 19. The former captain of the “Red and White” ended his football career in 2021, and in 2022 he started coaching Zvezda St. Petersburg.

— Dmitry Vladimirovich, exactly a month has passed since the start of work on Spartak-2. How did this time go, is there anything unusual?

— There were no surprises. We prepared in advance a plan for the training process, training camps and selection of opponents for friendly matches. I started working as a coach a year and a half ago, so I quickly adapted to the team. Moreover, Spartak is not a foreign country for me.

—Have you managed to kill the player in you?

— It is difficult to give yourself such an assessment, because it will not be objective. I can say that I killed the player in me, but from the outside it may seem different, which I encountered more than once when my relatives and comrades said that I always behave like a player of football.

I have been focusing on coaching work for a long time, I understand how it is done, what mechanisms are used. It’s clear that there is still a lot to learn, I need to gain experience, but I am suited to the work. Today, I don’t think I’ve ever been a footballer, that’s already a thing of the past. Yes, I had a good football story, I became champion of Russia, I played for the national team at the World and European Championships, but now this is a turned page in my chronicle. I say that and I think that, apparently, I still killed the footballer in me (laughs).

— At the same time, you participate in game drills, showing players what to do on the field. Is this an attempt to pass on experience or teach football wisdom?

– Everything is simpler here. Sometimes there aren’t enough players due to injuries, sometimes you need a neutral player, and I take part in training with pleasure. But there is one important point: I go out with the guys in workouts that are not planned as the main classes of the weekly cycle. This is where the coach must stand aside, explain what and how to do. Why not take part in some light or recovery training?

Another thing I noticed is that participating in training allows you to pay attention to details. There are times when you look from the outside and think that everything is fine: the rhythm is good and the speed is good; and when you are on the field with the guys, you see: somewhere the rhythm is not the same, somewhere the speed of thinking is not the same, and somewhere everything is much better than it is. appears from the edge.

— In one of the club videos, you actually threw the ball over the goalkeeper into the far corner. Fans started discussing your return to the field as a footballer. Is it possible?

“I will no longer shine in official matches, because my football career is a thing of the past. Trendy stories just don’t interest me. Today I focus on my work as head coach of Spartak-2. And to go out and play, there are various veteran tournaments, including legends matches, in which I have participated several times,” Kombarov told .

Kombarov defended the colors of Spartak from 2010 to 2019, played more than 270 matches and became champion of Russia and winner of the Super Cup as part of the “red and white”.
