Sunderland sacked Beale and appointed Dodds as new head coach

Ukrainian Rusin will have a new mentor

Sunderland announced the appointment Mike Dodds new head coach. He will replace in this post Michael Beal.

Beal, 43, has coached the Black Cats since Dec. 18. Under his leadership, the team won only four of their 12 Championship matches. Prior to this, his independent coaching career included QPR and Glasgow Rangers.

Dodds, 37, has been with Sunderland since 2021. Twice over the years, he briefly became the team’s acting head coach.

Let us remind you that Ukrainian Nazariy Rusin is playing for Sunderland this season. Dodds will become his third mentor this season, after Beale and Tony Mowbray. The Ukrainian forward played 18 matches for the first team of the English club, scored two goals (both in 2024), and provided one assist.

Sunderland, having suffered two defeats in a row, is in tenth place in the Championship, four points behind the play-off zone.
