The German Bundesliga club does not understand why the aggressor country’s teams are allowed to participate in European competitions.
The German Bundesliga club Cologne demands to completely remove Belarusian teams from European competitions. Right now, they just can’t play at home. However, according to the leadership of the “goats”, this is not enough.
The German team sent an official letter to UEFA with a request to reconsider the preliminary decision and remove the Belarusian teams from European competitions. In their opinion, the clubs of the aggressor country can not play in competitions in Europe, due to the support provided by the country to the Russian Federation in the war with Ukraine.
“In theory, Cologne could face Belarusian clubs BATE, Gomel, Shakhtar Soligorsk and Dynamo Minsk in the upcoming play-off qualifying games for the Conference League group stage. Taking into account the political situation and the support provided by the Belarusian government to Russia in the military aggression against Ukraine, Cologne called on UEFA to take decisive action and ban these groups from competing.
Among other things, Cologne strives for liberality, diversity and peaceful coexistence. For this reason, the board and leadership strongly condemned the proximity of the Belarusian government to Russia, which was openly reported in connection with the war in Ukraine. The massive support for Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine violates not only Cologne’s values and standards, but also the value standards of all sports.
For this reason, Cologne asked UEFA, in a letter addressed to President Aleksander Čeferin, to implement the IOC’s recommendations and immediately remove the Russian and Belarusian teams from all European competitions. Cologne also personally informed DFB leaders of this position and liaised with other teams participating in the qualification stage of the Conference League team to seek support from them.
Cologne also urged to clarify to UEFA that Belarusian teams should be excluded. The club board demands that the requirements be spread on social networks. Football club members request to support the project with a personal appeal to UEFA: requests for the exclusion of Belarusian teams are collected by e-mail to [email protected] and handed over to UEFA, “the statement said.
