The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has published details on its official website on the new format of the Champions League, which will come into force from the 2024/25 season.
The tournament will involve 36 teams instead of the current 32. The clubs were previously divided into 8 groups of four teams, and from the 2024/25 season the teams will play according to the so-called Swiss system and will be grouped into a single table. .
According to the new format, in the first stage, clubs will play eight matches, consisting of four matches at home and away. To determine opponents, teams will initially be divided into four seeded groups. The top 8 clubs in the ranking will automatically advance to the playoffs, and the teams placed 9 to 24 will face off in a home-and-away showdown to reach the 1/8 finals of the tournament. The clubs ranked 25th to 36th will complete their European competition for the season.
