Late in the evening of Wednesday, March 6, two return matches will take place within the framework of the 1/8 finals of the UEFA Champions League, during which two more participants in the quarter-finals of the strongest club tournament in the Old World. In one of the matches, Manchester City will host Danish Copenhagen. But a much more interesting meeting will take place in the Spanish capital, where Real will face German Leipzig.
In the first match between these teams, the Royal Club celebrated a minimal victory (the only goal scored by Brahim Diaz at the start of the second half), which perhaps would not have happened without the excellent play of the Los goalkeeper Blancos Andrei Lunin. Obviously, nothing is clear yet in this pair and it is too early to write off Leipzig, although it must be admitted that it is Carl Ancelotti’s team that is closest to the quarter-finals based on the results of the first meeting. Today, Real will even be satisfied with a draw.
After the victory in Leipzig, Real held three meetings in the Spanish Championship, but only won one. At home, the “creamy” team beat Sevilla with a minimal score (1:0). But in away matches, the Royal Club lost points, both in the confrontation with Rayo Vallecano (1:1) and in the thriller against Valencia (2:2). However, this did not stop Real from remaining at the top of the La Liga table, leading confidently after 27 rounds.
Leipzig also played three matches after the first match against Real Madrid. But unlike the Royal Club, Marco Rose’s team managed two of them. Moreover, it should be noted that the “Red Bulls” played productive matches, scoring 7 goals. At home, Leipzig beat Borussia Mönchengladbach (2:0), but away they beat Bochum (4:1). Rose’s team could have scored points in Munich, but they failed to maintain a draw in the away match against Bayern (1:2) in stoppage time.
Real Madrid and Leipzig have only played three matches between them. In addition to the match played three weeks ago, the clubs have met twice in the group stage of the 2022/23 Champions League. Then both teams won at home: in Leipzig – 3:2, in Madrid – 2:0.
