Leicester faces deprivation of points due to violation of financial fair play rules

Sanctions may be applied to the club next season

Lester faces a point penalty for violating the rules by the club financial fair play (FFP) English Premier Leagueand specifically the league’s rules on “profits and sustainability.”

Financial reports for last season, which saw the Foxes relegated from the Premier League, will be published next month. The club’s losses are expected to exceed the Premier League’s £105 million cap over a three-year period.

The league is expected to formally charge Leicester as early as next week. It is reported that possible sanctions in the form of deduction of points will be applied to the club as early as next season.

Let us remind you that Everton previously suffered for similar violations – the Premier League commission decided to fine the club ten points in the English Championship in November 2023. At the same time, the Toffees filed an appeal against the sanction, considering the punishment excessive. As a result, the Appeal Board agreed with two of the nine points on which the Liverpool club appealed the fine. In February 2024, the penalty was reduced to six points.

In January, it emerged that Nottingham Forest could be another club targeted for breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

In addition, Manchester City has been under investigation for a long time. In February 2023, the Premier League brought a number of charges against the townspeople. After many years of investigation, the case was referred to an independent commission, but a final decision has not yet been made.

Leicester, despite a recent series of three consecutive defeats, leads the Championship with 81 points ten rounds before the end of the regular season. The Foxes’ lead from third place is five points. A situation is likely in which the club will start the next season in the elite division, but with a points penalty – if its guilt in the above-mentioned violations is proven.
