Ukraine U-19 will play in the elite round of the 2024 Youth European Championship selection against Switzerland, North Macedonia and Latvia
Mentor Ukrainian national team U-19 Dmitry Mikhailenko commented on the upcoming matches of the elite round of qualifying for the 2024 European Youth Championship.
“I called many of the guys on the phone, wrote them off, and besides, we have an analytical group that was at the Euro qualifying round, so I know a lot about the players’ abilities. It was also an opportunity to look at those players who were previously injured.”
“There is a little excitement because this job is different from the club job. Most of the time has to be spent in front of a computer monitor, looking at potential candidates for the national team. I can’t wait to meet the team. The future tournament is fleeting, there are only three matches, and there is little time for preparation. There is no way to play something out – you need, first of all, to convince your players, to set them up for the kind of football that should give results.”
“Ukraine is a football nation. Now, due to Russian aggression, we do not have the opportunity to hold friendly matches, unlike other national teams. But we have character, a desire to win, and this also means a lot, so our team is also in the status of one of the candidates to get into the final part of the European Championship.”
The Ukrainian U-19 national team will play in the elite round of qualifying for the 2024 European Youth Championship with teams from Switzerland, North Macedonia and Latvia. The matches of this qualifying stage will take place from 18 to 26 March 2024. Only the winner of the quartet will receive a ticket to the final part of the continental championship.
Blue-yellow coach Dmitry Mikhailenko called up 20 players. Among them is the son of UAF President Andrei Shevchenko Christian, who recently received a Ukrainian passport, as well as Dynamo defender Alexey Gusev and Shakhtar midfielder Viktor Tsukanov.
Euro 2024 U-19 will take place in Northern Ireland from 15 to 28 July 2024. The continental championship will simultaneously serve as a UEFA selection for the 2025 World Cup (U-20).
