Shevchenko on the mobilization of football players: The final decision is made by government bodies

It was reported that Ukrainian athletes could fall under general mobilization

Head of the UAF Andrey Shevchenko expressed his opinion on the possible mobilization of football players into the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. According to Shevchenko, sport should be present in Ukraine, and our athletes are obliged to convey important narratives to an international audience with their international performances.

“This question is very complicated, because we are talking not only about players, but also about coaches, doctors, and referees. But…”

“Sport plays an important representative role both within the country and abroad. Preparation and participation in competitions is a marker of life extension in a state at war. In addition, sport always, and in the current conditions this is especially important, remains an effective lever of influence on the international community. This is a platform to convey the narratives that are important to us to an international audience.”

“We must help keep Ukraine in the focus of the international agenda, including through sports and football in particular. Therefore, even in such a difficult moment, in my opinion, it is important to continue to participate in competitions at the highest level, representing Ukraine and constantly mobilize the international community in support of our state.”

“However, the final decision regarding how many, at what events and who exactly should represent Ukraine is made by state authorities.”

At the end of last year, the head of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ukraine, Vadim Gutzeit, said that athletes could fall under general mobilization in Ukraine, since the NOC could not provide them with reservations.

Early in the morning of February 24, 2022, Russia launched rocket and air bombardments of most Ukrainian cities, and then launched a full-scale military invasion. The war against Russia has continued for the 747th day.
