Celta split with head coach Benitez

The Galicians, under the guidance of an experienced coach, achieved only five victories in 28 rounds of Examples

Celta officially announced her separation from her head coach Rafael Benitez. The Galician club thanked the experienced specialist and his staff for their “involvement, honesty and professionalism”, and also wished him success in the future.

The 63-year-old’s busy coaching career includes clubs such as Real Castilla, Valladolid, Osasuna, Extremadura, Tenerife, Valencia, Liverpool, Inter, Chelsea, Napoli, Real Madrid, Newcastle, Dalian Yifang, Everton.

Rafael twice led Valencia to victories in Primera, took the Champions League with Liverpool and the Europa League with Chelsea. In total, his coaching resume includes 14 trophies. Twice recognized as UEFA Coach of the Year, seven times became the best coach of the month in the Premier League.

Benitez arrived at Celta in the summer of 2023. Under his leadership, the Celestials won only five victories in the Spanish Championship with 14 defeats in 28 rounds. The Vigo team currently sits in 17th place, just two points above the relegation zone. At the same time, Celta reached the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey, where they lost to Real Sociedad.

In the first match after Benitez’s resignation, the team from Vigo will play away against Sevilla. The meeting will take place on Sunday, March 17th.
