The Portuguese veteran continues to break records
Centerback Porto Pepe set another record in Champions League.
The Portuguese became the first field player in the history of the tournament to take the field at the age of 41. At the time of the return match of the 1/8 finals of the Champions League between Porto and Arsenal, Pepe was 41 years and 5 days old.
With this figure, the defender continues to hold the age record for the Champions League playoffs among outfield players. In addition, Pepe is the fifth player to play in the Champions League at the age of 41+ and the second to reach the playoffs in his age category.
The championship among “veterans” is held by goalkeepers. Chelsea’s Mark Schwarzer became the first person to play in the playoffs over the age of 41 in the 2013/14 season. And the oldest player in the Champions League remains Lazio legend Marco Ballotta, who entered the field at the age of 43 years and 252 days.
Porto lost their place in the quarterfinals to Arsenal in a penalty shootout. Today the final two participants in the 1/4 finals of the Champions League will be determined.
