Earlier this season, Everton were punished for similar sins
Nottingham Forest fined four points in the English Championship for breaking the rules financial fair play (FFP) English Premier Leagueand specifically the league’s rules on “profits and sustainability.”
It is reported that the club does not agree with the punishment and is likely to appeal. At the moment, taking into account the fine, Lesniki are falling into the relegation zone, to 18th place.
Typically, the League resorts to such sanctions if the club’s losses exceed the permitted limit of 105 million pounds over three years. However, in the case of the NF, there is a nuance – since the club spent two years of the reporting period in the Championship, the allowed loss threshold for it is only 61 million.
Nottingham tried to ensure that the Premier League included the sale of Brennan Johnson to Tottenham, which generated £47.5 million in revenue, for the period. But this transfer took place in September last year – after the deadline calculated by the league commission.
Since the summer of 2022 (after promotion), Forest have signed 42 new players for a total of around £250 million. At the end of last season, the team led by Chris Cooper finished 16th and retained their place in the Premier League. Since December 2023, Lesnikov has been training Nuno Espirito Santa.
Let us remind you that Everton was previously fined 10 points for similar violations (only on a larger scale). At the same time, the Toffees filed an appeal against the sanction, considering the punishment excessive. As a result, the Appeal Board agreed with two of the nine points on which the Liverpool club appealed the fine. In February 2024, the penalty was reduced to six points.
It was revealed in January that Nottingham could become yet another club hit for breaking the Premier League’s rules on profits and sustainability. In March, information appeared about possible sanctions against Leicester, who were relegated from the Premier League last year.
In addition, Manchester City has been under investigation for a long time. In February 2023, the Premier League brought a number of charges against the townspeople. After many years of investigation, the case was referred to an independent commission, but a final decision has not yet been made.
Nottingham were left with 21 points after the penalty, four less than Everton after a successful appeal. Espirito Santo’s team, which has not won in the championship for more than a month, will host Crystal Palace in the next round on March 30.
