Piquerez, from Palmeiras, was one of Marcelo Bielsa’s call-ups for the Uruguay national team, but was cut after confusion over the date of his flight
Joaquin Piquerezleft-back of Palm treeshad been called up to the Uruguay national team, but was cut by the delegation of Marcelo Bielsa after confusion in logistics. The player had everything planned to join the Uruguayan squad, but he had a setback when heading to Europe and was recalled.
At first, the Uruguayan Football Federation Palmeiras informed that the left-back would have to board this Monday, 18th, at 3pm (Brasília time). However, Piquerez’s ticket was rescheduled for last Sunday, the 17th, at the same time as the previous ticket. Thus, Verdão was communicated in the morning.
After the Uruguayan team contacted Palmeiras, the club tried to find a new flight for the player, as he would have to board almost immediately. However, the delegation opted to recall the full-back, who had not even been announced among those chosen, but was among the names “reserved” by Bielsa.
Marcelo Bielsa’s calls in Uruguay are different from what we are used to in Brazil, which take place weeks before the determined clashes. The Argentine coach will only reveal the official list once the entire squad arrives for training. Before that, the team has athletes “reserved” by the commander, but confirmation only comes with the group’s presentation.
Part of the delegation has already traveled to Spain, where the Uruguayan team will face the Basque Country on March 23rd. After the confrontation with the European team, Uruguay will face Ivory Coast, current champion of the African Cup of Nationsin Lens, France.
