Volkov: “If I had played badly for Krasnodar, no one would have called me to the Russian national team”

Russian national team defender Sergei Volkov told that if he had played poorly for Krasnodar, Valery Karpin would not have included him in the national team for the March training camp.

This season, the 21-year-old footballer played for Krasnodar in 25 matches, in which he scored three assists and one yellow card, including three matches for Volkov in March.

— You are quite young, but you are already regularly part of the national team. Do you consider yourself basic?

– I wouldn’t say that. You always have to prove yourself. After the composition was published, Valery Georgievich said that it was a list based on the past two rounds of the RPL. I think the coaching staff is focusing on who is currently in what condition and who is performing well on the field. If I played badly or if I didn’t play for the club, no one would call me up to the national team.

— Krasnodar is known for its academy. When will the time come when the club will become the basis of the national team?

“I don’t know, it all depends on the players,” Volkov told .

Volkov made his debut for the Russian national team in 2023 and played three matches. The Russian national team is holding a training camp during which it will play with the teams of Serbia (March 21, 8:00 p.m. Moscow time) and Paraguay (March 25, 8:00 p.m. Moscow time). The two friendly matches will take place at the VTB Arena stadium in Moscow.

The channel will broadcast live the friendly matches of the Russian national team with the teams of Serbia and Paraguay.
