The International Football Association Board (IFAB) could change the rules for determining offside, reports Marca.
According to the source, it is planned to start registering offside only if a player of the attacking team approaches the penultimate player in front of the opponent’s goal with his whole body, and not any part of this one. Currently, an “offside” position is determined if any part of a player of the attacking team’s body that can be used to play football is closer to the opponent’s goal line than the ball and the forward- last defending player.
It should be noted that the rules will only change in February 2025. The IFAB Assembly will study the tests regarding the introduction of the blue card and possible changes to the offside rules and then make a decision.
The reform of the definition of offside had already been initiated by former Arsenal coach Arsène Wenger. The Frenchman presented his project to the president of the International Football Federation (FIFA), Gianni Infantino, in March 2021.
