Student Doctor details the dramatic seconds of terror experienced after Javier Altamirano’s collapse

Marcelo Busquets, also a fan of Estudiantes de La Plata, witnessed everything that happened from one of the stands of the UNO Jorge Luis Hirschi stadium.

The days pass and the turmoil continues in the world of football caused by the sudden crisis suffered by the Chilean footballer Javier Altamirano in the middle of the match between Estudiantes de La Plata and Boca Juniors. This time, it was Marcelo Busquets, a clinical doctor who was a fan of “Pincha” and who witnessed what happened by being present at the UNO Jorge Luis Hirschi stadium at the time of the events, who shed light on this which could have caused the sudden thrombosis in the player.

“After the studies carried out today, it was determined that the cause of the seizure suffered by the player was superior longitudinal sinus thrombosis (brain) . It’s stable , with appropriate medications and pending further studies. He will remain hospitalized for further monitoring,” the club announced shortly after carrying out the corresponding examinations, somewhat reassuring the supporters and relatives of the athlete.

In conversation with the trans-Andean media Infobae, Busquets analyzed what he saw with his own eyes. “Thrombosis usually occurs when blood is not circulating. The sinus is a place through which venous blood passes, at the top of the skull. For some reason, the blood did not circulate and a thrombus formed in this place.

Regarding the medical studies carried out which allowed him to know his diagnosis, he assured that “resonance is more important because it has greater clarity for the anatomy” . He specifies, however, that this type of situation very rarely occurs among high-level athletes, because “there are preventive medications that could be used. (…) they will surely apply anticoagulants to him (during his hospitalization).”

“The boy has no criminal record and another important point is that The tomogram revealed no injuries or bleeding. . Although the MRI carried out this Monday explained the reason for the crisis in the case of Altamirano, there are other reasons that can generate this condition in a high-level athlete, such as metabolic reasons, a lot of heat, a loss of sodium, potassium, glucose consumption and physical wear (…) Players often undergo vascular checks with their medical staff; “They are always closely monitored.” he added.

The situation reminded us of what happened with the Dane Christian Eriksen, who collapsed after a cardiac arrest during the match against Finland at Euro 2021. Or the cardiac arrhythmia suffered by Sergio Agüero in November of the same year and which forced him to retire from activity.

Regarding the feeling felt in the sports arena, he explained that “We saw how he fell between Enzo Pérez and Santiago Ascacibar. It was a feeling of helplessness because at that moment I wanted to throw myself headlong into the stands and there is nothing we can do. The first thing that comes to mind is that someone can die suddenly. said the doctor.

Alleged unintentional blow

A video from before Altamirano’s arrest went viral on social media. In this you can see a clash between the national footballer and Cristian Lema. Speculation began as to whether this blow could have caused the thrombosis. After watching the video, Busquets is not at all categorical in his analysis. “We don’t know exactly what happened.”

Furthermore, he added that these types of conditions can be due to a series of factors and not just a hard blow, which is why studies are still needed to clarify as much as possible what happened. “This type of situation can come from a hard blow, but also not have this origin. That’s why they continue to evaluate it.

Of course, there are also those who blame the defender of Xeneize, since from another angle the alleged blow of which he was initially accused is not obvious, in addition to the fact that we can see how the head of ‘Altamirano never touches the ground directly.
