Former Brazilian national team player Robinho’s defense appeals decision to arrest him for rape

Defense of a former Brazilian national team player Robinho filed a petition with Brazil’s Supreme Court to overturn his immediate arrest, Reuters reports.

A Brazilian court previously ruled that Robinho, sentenced in absentia in Italy to 9 years in prison, must serve his sentence in Brazil. The former footballer is subject to immediate arrest.

In the request, the former Santos, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Milan player’s lawyers requested an injunction against the country’s Supreme Court’s decision that Robinho must serve his sentence immediately.

In 2017, a Milan court found Robinho and five others guilty of gang-raping a 22-year-old Albanian woman after getting her drunk at a nightclub in 2013. The verdict was upheld by an appeals court in 2020 and confirmed by the Italian Supreme Court in 2022.

In March 2024, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said the former Real Madrid and Milan footballer should serve a prison sentence for rape in his native country.
