Athletistic / Football. A new scandal breaks out in the Premier League linked to violations of the principles of financial fair play. Two major clubs – Manchester City and Chelsea – risk sanctions up to exclusion from the tournament for violating these same principles.
According to The Sun, the Premier League’s independent commission looking into financial irregularities has warned both clubs that they risk being kicked out of the league if they are ultimately found guilty.
It is worth noting that Manchester City was charged with 115 cases of violations as of February 2023, but to date, City’s lawyers are contesting these cases in court. Chelsea have not yet been charged, but in the summer of 2023 irregularities in financial reporting were revealed, committed when the Londoners were managed by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich.
This season, by decision of the independent commission of the Premier League, four points were taken from Nottingham Forest for financial violations, and Everton immediately lost 10 points (after an appeal, the sanction was reduced to 6 points).
According to The Sun, Nottingham and Everton were sanctioned for offenses described as “minor”. But the accusations against Munch City and Chelsea are described as “serious”.
Manchester City have scored 63 points from 28 matches and are in third place in the Premier League table for the 2023/2024 season. Chelsea are in 11th place with 39 points after 27 matches.
