Matvienko: Captain’s armband? I tried to advise and help everyone

Nikolay was the captain of the Ukrainian national team in the match with Iceland

Central defender Ukrainian national team Nikolay Matvienko talked about the match against Iceland (2:1) in the final playoff qualifying for Euro 2024. In this match, a Shakhtar player led the blue-yellows as captain for the first time.

“Captain’s armband? I tried to advise and help everyone. Unfortunately, we allowed the opponent to shoot and our goalkeeper did not see the moment of the strike. When we miss the ball, we start playing better. This frees our hands.”

“We were nervous because a ticket to the Euro was at stake. It is very serious. The team is young and everyone is afraid to take the first step. When we concede, it disappears and we start playing normal football,” Matvienko said.

Sergei Rebrov’s team will play in a quartet with E with Belgium, Slovakia and Romania at the 2024 European Championship. The Ukrainians will play their first match against Romania on June 17. Ticket sales for the blue-yellow matches at Euro 2024 are also open.

Ukraine will play at the European Championships for the fourth time. The blue-and-yellows have consistently competed in the finals of the continental championship since 2012.
