Karpin has enough strength to work in national team and club, believes Sennikov

Former Russian national footballer Dmitry Sennikov commented on the possible extension of the contract with the head coach of the Russian national team Valery Karpin.

The 55-year-old specialist’s current contract with the Russian Football Federation (RFU) expires in the summer of 2024. Karpin also serves as head coach of Rostov.

– I think it’s right. I don’t see the point in changing anything now. Karpin works very well with young people, which he shows in Rostov, he has taken the right vector in the development of the team for the future. Why hire a new specialist when everything is fine now?

— How do you think Karpin can motivate himself in the Russian national team when there are no official matches?

“It is clear that he will organize training camps and call up promising or fit players. It depends on the RFU to have matches like those against Cameroon and Serbia. The matches may be friendly, but the status of the opponent is very important.

— Will it be easy to find a replacement for Karpin if he still refuses to extend the agreement with the Russian national team?

– Of course, anything can happen, but I think Valery Georgievich has enough strength to work in this mode: in the national team and in the club. But if there are higher goals, they say that Spartak wants to take Karpin…

— Yes, but Spartak does not want a part-time coach.

— Probably, if there is a club fighting for the first place, it will probably be difficult to unite in this situation. Other ambitions. It is unlikely that the coach of a leading team will be able to combine this.

— Who should join the national team to replace Karpin? They call it Semak. Perhaps the return of Cherchesov?

– There are many options here. There is no need to invent anything. There is no need to take a stranger into this situation. It’s 100%. It has to be a coach from our championship. With an understanding of Russian football,” Sennikov said, as quoted by RB Sport.

In the spring of 2022, FIFA and UEFA suspended the Russian national team from tournaments under their auspices. After that, Karpin’s team played only friendly matches.
