The former head of the Spanish Football Federation faces up to two and a half years in prison
Spanish High Court prosecutor Marta Durantes calls for a prison sentence for the former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) Luis Rubiales.
The prosecutor’s office brought official charges against the functionary on two counts: sexual assault and coercion into sexual relations. One count carries a prison sentence of one year, the second carries a prison term of 18 months.
The functionary was previously suspended from football activities due to the fact that he kissed football player Jennifer Hermoso on the lips during the award ceremony at the 2023 World Cup. And the official put her colleague Athena del Castillo on his shoulder and carried him across the field.
The FIFA Disciplinary Committee suspended Rubiales from all football-related activities at the national and international levels for 90 days until the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings opened against the Spanish functionary on August 24. FIFA subsequently suspended the functionary for three years. Rubiales said he will appeal the decision.
Luis Rubiales resigned in September. However, he refused to apologize directly to Hermoso, continuing to insist that the kiss was “consensual.” Hermoso, in turn, formally filed a complaint against Rubiales with the Spanish National Prosecutor’s Office.
