Lille beat Marseille to move into third place in Ligue 1

The Provencals suffered their fourth defeat in a row

Lille won a major victory at home against Marseille in the match of candidates for European Cup places – 3:1.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair, but produced no goals. At the start of the second half, the hosts took the lead: Jonathan David scored his 16th goal in the championship from the penalty spot, which he himself earned. Only Kylian Mbappe has more.

Midway through the half the Dawgs increased their lead. The cutting of the Marseille players led to a quick attack and a high-quality dribble from Remy Cabell.

Olympique seemed to be back in the game after a slightly curious goal from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. But the hosts immediately restored the gap – Gabriel Gudmundsson, forgotten in the center of the penalty area, closed in Thiago Santos’ cross.

Marseille has already suffered a third defeat in a row (and if you count the Europa League, then the fourth) and remained seventh, but at the end of the round it has every chance of falling lower. Lille, at least until Sunday, was ahead of Monaco and climbed into third place.

The teams will play their next matches in European competition on April 11. Marseille will play away against Benfica in the Europa League, and Lille will play against Aston Villa in the Conference League, also away.
