Plekhanov: We will hold two training camps before EuroBasket U-20

The youth team coach plans to initially rely on players who played in the Ukrainian U-18 national team

Head coach Ukrainian national U-20 basketball team Valery Plekhanov spoke about the team’s plans to prepare for EuroBasket 2024 in division B.

“We have two training camps planned. We should start sometime in early June. The gathering place has not yet been finalized – there are several options. We plan to hold about eight test matches, their number may change depending on the level of the opponents.”

“We are currently negotiating both with teams from Division A and with teams from other groups in Division B. As soon as the schedule is agreed upon, we will publish it on the FBU website so that fans can follow our preparations.”

“The main thing is the choice of players for the national team. The difficulty is that most players of this age are abroad. It’s difficult to track them all; contact with some has disappeared.”

Two years ago I led this team at the U-18 European Championship, so first of all I wrote to our group and most of the guys already responded. The first thing I asked was to confirm their desire to defend the colors of the Ukrainian national team at this year’s European Championship. Then write down your current height, weight and role, because there are players who have grown and moved to heavier positions.”

“Starting this year, the FBU coaching council decided that all teams, from the national team to U-14, will have to play in a similar style. Therefore, we have contact with the coach of the national team Vitaly Stepanovsky, with his assistant in Ukraine Artem Slipenchuk. We are discussing the nuances, we are sure that they will provide 100% assistance.”

The 2024 European U-20 Championship in Division B will be held in Pitesti, Romania, from July 12 to 21. The Ukrainian national team will play in Group C, where its opponents will be Sweden, Hungary, Kosovo, Armenia and Moldova.
