Following Beckenbauer, another legend from the 70s left our world, also at the age of 78
On Monday, April 15, the legendary German football player passed away Bernd Hölzenbein. He died surrounded by his family after a long illness at the age of 78.
Helzenbein spent almost his entire professional career in Frankfurt Eintracht (1967 – 1981) as a midfielder and striker. He played over 500 matches for the Eagles and scored over 200 goals. He is the top scorer of the Frankfurt club in the Bundesliga with 160 goals scored.
Bernd played 40 matches for the German national team and scored five goals. Became world champion in 1974 and vice-champion of Europe in 1976. It was he who earned the penalty from which Paul Breitner equalized in the victorious final of the 1974 World Cup (2:1 against the Netherlands).
After finishing his playing career, Helzenbein held various positions (the latter as a strategic advisor) in his native Eintracht from 1988 to 2022.
Helzenbein is not the first representative of the legendary galaxy of German football of the 70s to leave our world in 2024. Let us remember that in January the great Franz Beckenbauer passed away, who also passed away at the age of 78. At the end of February, another outstanding German football player, Andreas Brehme, the 1990 world champion, died.
It’s a sad day for Eintracht Frankfurt. A great legend has left us.
