Deontay will fight Zhang Zhilei in June
Former WBC World Heavyweight Champion Deontay Wilder (43-3-1, 42 KOs) commented on the upcoming fight with the former interim WBO champion Zhang Zhilei (26-2-1, 21 KOs).
“There were times when all my love and passion for boxing died for me. When you don’t have that in something, it’s not good. I needed to refocus and get myself together.”
“All my life I have been selfless, pleasing to other people, making their lives wonderful, supporting and helping many through my blood, sweat and tears. As fighters, we earn money with real blood, sweat and tears. I’ve gotten to where I am right now, I know I’ve achieved greatness.”
“Now the main thing is me. I call it selfishness, and sometimes it’s okay to be selfish. At the moment, I need to bring back the hunger and desire, to give people the Bronze Bomber, which they really missed. So I have to be selfish.”
Wilder and Zhilei will officially fight on June 1 in Saudi Arabia. Also, as part of a large-scale boxing evening between the promotional companies Queensberry and Matchroom, British heavyweight Daniel Dubois and mandatory challenger for the IBF title Filip Hrgovic will enter the ring.
The main event of the event on June 1 will be a fight for the title of absolute world light heavyweight champion between WBO title holder Dmitry Bivol and WBC, WBO and IBF champion Artur Beterbiev.
Wilder had his last fight in December 2023 in Riyadh at the “Day of Reckoning” show, losing to Joseph Parker by unanimous decision. Zhilei lost to the same Parker in early March 2024. At the same time, Zhang knocked down the New Zealander twice.
