Haney: I gave him a chance, and it’s only right if he gives me a chance back

Devin’s defeat did not take away his championship belt

WBC junior welterweight belt holder Devin Haney (31-1, 15 KOs) commented on the defeat from Ryan Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs). For Devin, this defeat was the first in his career.

“Allah is the perfect planner. I’m disappointed with my performance, but I’m confident that I was a true champion and I could fight after being knocked down and shocked. He caught me at the very beginning, when I lacked attention. He managed to surprise me, and I missed his left hook. We were preparing for this, but I made a mistake and he punished me for it.”

“I was more surprised than shocked in the episode with the first knockdown. Like I said, he came out and jumped at me, as if he knew he was going to hit me, but the whole point is that I missed the blow.”

“I thought the referee was letting him turn his back on me, letting him clinch too much, but it is what it is. Allah makes no mistakes.”

“Of course I want a rematch. It was a close fight and I would love to have another one. I gave him a chance, and it’s only right if he gives me a chance back.”

The fight took place in Brooklyn, at the Barclays Center. Haney was knocked down three times during the fight. According to the judges’ notes, Ryan triumphed with scores of 114:100 and 115:109. Another judge recorded a draw (112:112).

Garcia, despite the victory, did not take the championship belt from Haney, as he exceeded the agreed weight category limit. According to WBC head Mauricio Sulaiman, the belt does not become vacant, but remains in Devin.

Haney defeated Regis Prograis by unanimous decision in his last fight. Garcia knocked out Mexican Oscar Duarte in early December 2023.
