Marta addressed the stands with the words “Glory to Ukraine,” and then in an interview she explained the meaning of this greeting
Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk explained to the European public the meaning and importance of the traditional Ukrainian greeting, which she addressed to the public after the final match of the tournament WTA 500 in German Stuttgart.
“What I said was “Glory to Ukraine!” This is an expression that we say in Ukraine. We say “Glory to Ukraine,” and people answer: “Glory to the heroes.” I said this before too, but it became more common when the war started.
“For example, this is how I personally recognize Ukrainians abroad. Because, let’s say, when we are in Monaco, there are a lot of Russians there, of course, and Ukrainians. And if I see someone whom I consider Ukrainian, I say: “Glory to Ukraine!” If they don’t answer, I know for sure that they are Russians (laughs).”
“I think it’s important to give that recognition to Ukraine and everything we’ve been through as a nation. These are very difficult times. And they continue to be heavy. So I don’t want anyone to forget about it because it’s still happening.”
Let us remind you that Kostyuk reached the final in Stuttgart, simultaneously knocking out three representatives of the top 10 world rankings from the tournament bracket – Zheng Qingwen from China, Coco Gauff from the USA and Marketa Vondrousová from the Czech Republic.
In the decisive match, Marta lost to Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan in two sets. Thanks to her successful performance at the tournament, the Ukrainian will be able to update her personal record in the upcoming edition of the world rankings, taking 21st place.
