Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho shared his memories of the Champions League match between Porto and Manchester United in the 2003/04 season and said the encounter changed his career.
In March 2004, Porto, under the leadership of Mourinho, drew against the English club in the second leg of the 1/8 finals of the Champions League (1:1) and reached the next stage of the tournament in winning 3:2 on total. After the winning goal, Mourinho ran towards the players from the coaches’ bench to the corner flag.
“I’ve had a lot of weird celebrations during my career, but this is the moment that probably changed the direction of my career.” The other day I passed a guy on the street who asked me: “When will things be like this again in Portugal?” I said we can win the European Championship in a few months because we have an incredible team, the best ever. But with a club that will win the Champions League again in Portugal? Let’s see if we can do it in the next 20 years,” Mourinho was quoted as saying by the Telegraph.
That season, the Portuguese club led by Mourinho won the Champions League, beating Monaco 3-0 in the final. Russian midfielder Dmitry Alenichev played for Porto and scored one of the goals in the final.
