Devin lost to Garcia but retained his belt
Father of WBC light welterweight belt holder Devina Haney — Bill Haney – said that his son will take a break from his career after the fight with Ryan Garcia.
“Devin is taking a break. We’re going to keep working until he comes back and I’m sure we’ll make an announcement soon.”
“If Haney has a broken jaw, he will need time to recover before returning to the ring to prevent the problem from happening again. He suffered a terrible loss to Ryan in the fight and was lucky not to be knocked out. It might have been better if Haney had been knocked out because he would have suffered less damage.”
The fight took place in Brooklyn, at the Barclays Center. Haney was knocked down three times during the fight. According to the judges’ notes, Ryan triumphed with scores of 114:100 and 115:109. Another judge recorded a draw (112:112).
Garcia, despite the victory, did not take the championship belt from Haney, as he exceeded the agreed weight category limit. According to WBC head Mauricio Sulaiman, the belt does not become vacant, but remains with Devin.
Before the fight with Ryan, Haney, in his last fight, confidently defeated Regis Prograis by unanimous decision. Initially, Devin voiced the idea of confrontation with the Spaniard Sandor Martin. After the defeat, Haney hinted at the possibility of a rematch with Garcia.
