A radical change in the leadership of the Dragons
The new president Porto became Andre Villas-Boas.
The ex-coach of Chelsea, Tottenham, Porto and Marseille beat incumbent President Pinto da Costa in the elections, gaining more than 80% of the votes. Andre was elected to a four-year term.
Pinta da Costa managed the club for 42 years, winning 68 trophies with Porto (including two Champions Leagues). Under his tenure, Villas-Boas, as coach of the Dragons, triumphed in the Portuguese Championship, Cup and Super Cup, and also won the Europa League.
At the same time, Porto recently extended the contract with coach Sergio Conceicao. However, in connection with the holding of presidential elections and his replacement, the decision to conclude a new agreement ceases and again appears on the agenda.
This season, Porto confidently qualified for the Champions League playoffs, beating Shakhtar twice along the way (3:1, 5:3). In the 1/8 finals, Conceição’s team was dramatically eliminated by Arsenal in a penalty shootout.
In the Portuguese Championship, the Dragons are in third place, only ahead of Braga in terms of additional indicators. It is almost guaranteed that the club will remain without the Champions League in the 2024/25 season.
