Groves: Usyk dominates heavyweight, he will beat Fury

The ex-world champion continues to consider the Ukrainian the favorite in the fight for the undisputed title

Former world champion George Groves continues to count as WBO/WBA/IBF/IBO title holder Alexandra Usika favorite in the fight against the WBC champion Tyson Fury.

“Yes, I choose Usik in the fight against Fury. I remember when Usyk first moved up to heavyweight, I said: “He’s a dark horse.” Don’t write this guy off.”

“In previous years we have seen cruisers move into heavyweights and dominate. This seemed incomprehensible to many people. They said he would never compete with Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury. I still think Usyk will beat him.”

“There is an opinion: “A good big fighter beats a good small fighter.” But I think Usyk is an exceptional fighter. In terms of boxing abilities, Usyk is much better.”

Groves previously favored Usyk ahead of the Fury fight. The ex-champion noted that Tyson has become older, and his legs are now stiffer and heavier, which will affect the fight.

The unification fight between Usik and Fury will take place on May 18. MEGOGO became the official broadcaster of the event for Ukrainian viewers.

The event will be hosted by Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The WBC proposes to reform the judges for the reporting fight, increasing their number to 5-6 people. Penalties for boxers who refuse to fight are $10 million.

WBC President Mauricio Suleiman announced that an agreement had been concluded between the boxers for a re-fight. The WBO is also ready to sanction the second fight. It was reported that the fate of a possible rematch depends on the holding of the first fight. Fury said that the contract has a mandatory rematch clause, and a re-fight with Usyk could take place in October.

Suleiman also presented a special WBC belt for which Usik and Fury will fight. Its design uses the colors of the Ukrainian and British flags. Pope Francis has already blessed the World Boxing Council belt that will be on the line in the title fight.
