Belgium head coach Tedesco has not changed his decision, despite Thibault’s return to action at the end of the club season
Thibaut Courtois will miss European Championship 2024 due to a knee injury, despite his return to the lineup Real Madrid.
Head coach Belgium national team Domenico Tedesco does not count on an experienced goalkeeper when choosing the squad for the upcoming continental championship, which will be held in June-July on the fields of Germany.
“Everything has already been said on this topic. I don’t want a tit-for-tat situation. We focus on players who are in good shape,” the coach said.
Let us remind you that Courtois has not yet played a single minute this season and only today was included in the squad for the match of the Madrid club for the first time. During the campaign, Thibault suffered two serious injuries – first in August (torn cruciate ligament of the left knee), then in March (torn medial meniscus of the right knee). After each of them, the Belgian needed surgery.
Back in December, Courtois himself said that he decided to skip Euro 2024 in order to carry out full training at the Madrid club and get into optimal shape for the 2024/25 season.
Despite all his troubles, the 31-year-old goalkeeper managed to quickly recover. Already in April he began team training. Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti said that Courtois will return for the match against Cadiz on May 4 and may then even be able to play against Bayern in the return (home) semi-final of the Champions League.
In the absence of the main goalkeeper of the Blancos, Ukrainian Andrey Lunin took his chance, who is having a brilliant season – 28 matches, 12 of them to zero, 25 goals conceded.
On April 28, Courtois was included in Real’s squad for the first time this season, and today he was included in the official match report. He will start as a reserve for the first semi-final match between Bayern and Real Madrid, which will start in Munich at 22:00 Kyiv time.
