We are talking about decisions made by the referees after viewing the episode on the monitor
Chapter English Premier League referees Howard Webb announced another innovation in the work of league referees related to the use of the VAR system and its public criticism.
According to the former Premier League referee, from next season (most likely) the main referees will explain to the spectators in the stands, as well as to the television audience, the reasons and motivations for decisions made with the help of VAR. We will only talk about those situations where the referee’s viewing of the episode on the monitor after a prompt from the VAR led to a change in the original decision.
“The VAR process really needs improvement, doesn’t it? When you hear referees talking on football TV shows, it’s clear what’s going on; everything becomes obvious. We are looking for ways to improve the stadium experience.”
“One of the things you may have seen at FIFA tournaments like the Women’s World Cup is the referee’s explanations of decisions that appear on the screen. So we’re looking at it with an open mind, we’re open to taking it into the Premier League.”
“It would be very helpful if the referee could talk to everyone in the stadium and explain the reason for the decision.”
This practice began to be used on a trial basis last year at various international tournaments, including the aforementioned Women’s World Cup. Since November it has been added to the IFAB Rules of the Game. The policy for referees to explain VAR decisions has already been introduced in some major leagues – such as MLS (USA), Liga MX (Mexico), A-League (Australia).
At the same time, IFAB, the body that determines the rules and laws of football, continues to be categorically against broadcasting negotiations between field referees and VAR judges in real time.
This innovation has yet to be approved by the Premier League, but it is believed that this is just a formality. The new practice will most likely be introduced as early as the 2024/25 season.
