Romanchuk: You can compete at the 2024 Olympics in open water, but you don’t want to risk your health

In the Seine River, where open water competitions are planned, high levels of pollution are recorded

Ukrainian swimmer Mikhail Romanchuk said that he doubts the advisability of speaking at Olympics 2024 in open water competitions.

“There will be open water after the pool, and there is an opportunity to sign up for it. But on the other hand, I don’t want to risk my health and perform in that river. Let’s see what my head comes up with. There is still an opportunity to enter open water, but we’ll see how it goes.”

Open water swimming at the Paris Olympics is planned to be held in the Seine. The river is reported to have high levels of E. coli contamination, threatening the competition. Organizers are working to cleanse the Seine.

Romanchuk did not directly qualify for the open water competition. However, he has the opportunity to enter his quotas at long distances in the pool (800 and 1500 m).

Mikhail is a two-time Olympic medalist in Tokyo 2020. Romanchuk obtained three licenses for the 2024 Games (at distances of 400, 800 and 1500 meters freestyle).
