The bumblebees did not want to take revenge on the Carnivaleers for the fatal tripping in the last round of last season
Borussia Dortmund suffered a major defeat from Mainz in the away match of the 33rd round of the German Bundesliga – 0:3.
After outstanding success in the Champions League (remember, the Bumblebees beat PSG again 1:0 and reached the final), Edin Terzic replaced almost the entire squad, leaving only Nico Schlotterbeck in the starting lineup. As a result, the underdog tore the visitors’ defense to shreds in the first half.
The hosts scored the first and third goals as if they were carbon copies – quickly entering the penalty area and passing the ball back under the executioner’s blow. The second goal was simply a gift from goalkeeper Alexander Mayer, who knocked the ball straight onto Lee Jae-sung’s foot.
Borussia could have returned to the game shortly after the break, but Youssouf Moukoko’s goal was disallowed for offside.
Thus, Dortmund were unable – or did not want – to take revenge on the Carnival players for the epic setback in the last round of last season (2:2), which deprived the club of the long-awaited Silver Salad Bowl. Borussia can calmly focus on preparing for the Champions League final (June 1, London).
For Mainz, the importance of this victory cannot be overstated. Boo Henriksen’s team overtook Union one round before the finish and left the relegation zone. In the last round, the Carnival players will play away against Wolfsburg.
