Stepanenko: We remember what happened at Euro 2016. We must learn from our mistakes

Shakhtar became the national champion by beating Dynamo, after which a brawl broke out on the field

Midfielder Shakhtar Taras Stepanenko commented on the victory over Dynamo (1:0) in the 28th round of the UPL and focused on the conflict that occurred between the players of both teams in the endgame of the meeting.

“We always have a good atmosphere in the Ukrainian national team, but at the end of the match with Dynamo, when the crush began, I was afraid that there would be no conflict. I immediately ran up because I understood that there could be emotions. Both Dynamo and us, but there was nothing serious. Fortunately, there were no scandals.”

“It is important that everyone arrives at the national team in a good mood. We can achieve results at the Euro, but we need a good microclimate. Now he is good in the national team, and it should continue to be so.”

“We remember what happened at Euro 2016. We must learn from our mistakes. And such conflicts are very tiring and take away strength.”

The match ended with a minimal victory for the Miners thanks to a goal from Georgy Sudakov. After the meeting on the field, a conflict arose between representatives of both teams, and Eguinaldo received a straight red card for unsportsmanlike behavior.

Success allowed Marino Pusic’s team to break away from their pursuer by 7 points and win another championship title ahead of schedule, two rounds before the end.

In May 2016, Taras Stepanenko scored against Dynamo and showed the Kiev fans the Shakhtar emblem. For this he was hit by Domagoj Vida and Andrey Yarmolenko. The conflict between two players of the Ukrainian national team became the most discussed topic in the press and affected the team’s performance at Euro 2016, where the Ukrainians lost 3 matches without scoring a single goal.

At the group stage of the European Championship, the blue-yellows will successively play with the teams of Romania (June 17), Slovakia (June 21) and Belgium (June 26). The matches will take place in Munich, Dusseldorf and Stuttgart, respectively.

Ukraine will play at the European Championships for the fourth time. The blue-and-yellows have consistently competed in the finals of the continental championship since 2012.
