UEFA has proposed that City Football Group reduce its stake in Manchester City or Girona to 30%

Both clubs have a common majority owner and will play in the 2024/25 Champions League

UEFA proposed to the company City Football Group reduce shares in Manchester city or Girona up to 30% in order to avoid conflicts of interest in Champions League 2024/25.

CFG owns 100% of City shares and 47% of the Catalan club. Both teams qualified for the main European Cup competition for the following season. UEFA rules prohibit teams with the same owner (or majority shareholder) from participating in the same tournament.

The European Football Union offered a way out in the form of reducing the stake in one of the clubs. The second option is to transfer all the shares of one club into a blind trust, controlled by a commission appointed by UEFA.

The CFG was reportedly given until June 3 to resolve the conflict of interest issue. Otherwise, one of the clubs will be relegated to the lower European competition. Priority will be given to the team that finishes higher in its championship. According to this principle, Manchester City (champion or silver medalist of England) has a higher chance of playing in the Champions League. Girona (claiming second to fourth place in Spain) could thus drop down into the Europa League.

Manchester City will play West Ham in the last round of the Premier League. Girona will play two matches – with Valencia and Granada.
