Klopp’s long-time assistant Lijnders has become the new head coach of RB Salzburg

For the last 10 years, the Dutch specialist has been working in Liverpool

RB Salzburg officially announced that from the new season the Dutch specialist will become the head coach of the club Pepijn Lijnderslong-term assistant Jurgen Klopp V Liverpool.

Leinders is 41 years old. He began his coaching career at the beginning of the century in the youth structures of PSV and Porto. In the 2013/14 season, he was part of the coaching staff of the Portuguese giants, subordinate first to Paulo Fonseca and then to Luis Castro.

In 2014, the Dutchman moved to Liverpool. He worked as a youth team coach for a year, after which he joined the first team coaching staff. From October 2015 to the present, with a short break in Nijmegen (2018), he has been an assistant to Jurgen Klopp – 463 joint matches in all tournaments. He became a co-author of all the Reds’ trophies of the new era, including the triumph in the 2019 Champions League and the 2020 Premier League.

In the aforementioned Nijmegen, Lijnders has received his only independent coaching experience so far – in the second half of the 2017/18 season. He won 11 victories in 22 matches, but could not solve the problem of reaching the Eredivisie.

Salzburg will officially present Lijnders at a press conference to follow in mid-June. Pepijn will arrive at the new club with assistant Vitor Matos, with whom he previously worked in both Porto and Liverpool.

Salzburg ends the current season under the management of And. O. head coach Onur Dzhinel. The club risks not winning the Austrian Bundesliga for the first time in the last 11 years – with one round to go, RB is two points behind Sturm.
