UAF Referee Committee: the penalty in the Shakhtar – Dynamo match was awarded correctly

At the same time, at the decisive moment of the Vorskla – Minai match, the referee made a mistake in awarding a penalty kick to the hosts’ goal

Famous former referee Nicola Rizzoliconsultant Committee of Referees of the Ukrainian Football Association (UAF)commented on the most resonant episodes from the matches of the 28th round Ukrainian Premier League.

In the match MinerDynamo (1:0) in the match on May 11, referee Alexey Derevinsky rightly did not give a penalty in favor of the nominal hosts in the 27th minute, but at the same time incorrectly “awarded” Georgy Sudakov with a yellow card, since in that episode there was no obvious simulation on the part of the midfielder .

Two minutes later, Derevinsky did not react to Konstantin Vivcharenko’s handball in the Dynamo penalty area, but after a prompt from the VAR referee (Denis Shurman) and watching the video replay, he absolutely correctly awarded a penalty. Sudakov scored the winning goal from it, which brought Shakhtar the championship title ahead of schedule.

Rizzoli also commented on some episodes from the scandalous ending of the Vorskla-Minaj match (2:3), which took place earlier that day. In the 89th minute, with the score 2:2, chief referee Nazariy Gyorgy, after the recommendation of the VAR (Yuriy Ivanov), awarded a penalty to the visitors’ goal, and then, also thanks to a hint from the video assistant, ordered this kick to be interrupted due to the premature exit of goalkeeper Alexander Kemkin from goal lines.

In both cases the VAR was right and both decisions were made fairly. Let’s remember that Kemkin twice in a row reflected Felipe’s shots from 11 meters and saved Minaj from defeat. The denouement came in a few minutes.

At 90+8 minutes, Gyorgy pointed to the “spot” already in the Vorskla penalty area, allegedly for playing with the defender’s hand (the player fell and leaned on his hand, and the ball hit it from the body). Verdict: the referee made the wrong decision, and he did not change it even after VAR’s instructions and watching the replay. The correct decision, according to Rizzoli and the Referees Committee, would be to allow the game to continue. As a result, Minaj scored the winning goal from that penalty and intensified the fight for survival in the UPL to the limit.
