Last year’s champion is the closest to missing out on European competition
Fiorentina And Napoli alternately took the lead, but did not reveal the winner in the dramatic match of the 37th round of the Italian Serie A – 2:2.
Last year’s champions, desperate for a win to maintain a decent chance of qualifying for European competition, quickly opened the scoring as Amir Rrahmani unchallenged Matteo Politano’s cross from the corner of the field.
The hosts came back at the end of the half, and also from a set piece. Cristiano Biraghi scored with his trademark direct free-kick, off the crossbar and into the top corner, with no chance for Alex Meret. Less than two minutes later, the Violets were already ahead: Mbala Nzola took the ball from someone else’s penalty area and with a neat shot, curled the ball into the far corner.
Soon after the break, the Parthenopeans equalized. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia gave a fitting response to Biraghi, also hitting the top corner of Pietro Terraciano’s goal from a free kick.
Subsequently, a double-edged game was observed. Thus, Politano missed a couple of good chances for Napoli (in one case, Fiorentina was saved by the post). Vincenzo Italiano’s team, in turn, earned a penalty in the 80th minute, but the referee overturned his decision after reviewing VAR.
Napoli failed to beat today’s opponent in the table and remained in ninth place. Francesco Calzona’s team has only one match left to play – at home against Lecce. Fiorentina, in turn, will play in the championship against Cagliari and Atalanta, and on May 29 the Violets will face Olympiacos in the Conference League final.
