“The UEFA Cup with CSKA is the greatest achievement of my coaching career” – Valery Gazzaev

Former CSKA head coach Valery Gazzaev told that winning the UEFA Cup with the “reds and blues” was his main achievement in his career.

CSKA defeated Portuguese Sporting in the 2004/05 UEFA Cup final with a score of 3: 1. The match took place on May 18, 2005 at the José Alvalade stadium in Lisbon.

“I can say that this is the greatest achievement of my coaching career.” The UEFA Cup is one of the two most prestigious trophies in European football. This is not only my great achievement, but also that of all the players, the CSKA football club and all of Russian football. This breakthrough contributed to Zenit winning the trophy. I would like to see many more victories like this. It’s a pleasant day that is always nice to remember.

—In the morning of that day, did you imagine that you would hold the cup above your head?

– We were getting ready. Of course, we are in a difficult situation. It so happened that we played on the opponent’s field. They had the advantage in terms of supporters, but there were also three thousand of us coming. All this meant we were stronger. Yes, it was a difficult day, but we managed it,” Gazzaev told .
