In the shadow of Usik and Fury. Why the Berinchyk-Navarrete fight deserves more attention

What you need to know about the fight for the WBO lightweight world title Denis Berinchyk – Emmanuel Navarrete

Late at night on May 18th, the attention of all boxing fans will be focused on Riyadh, where Alexander Usyk and Tyson Fury will determine the absolute world heavyweight champion. But just a few hours after the main fight of the last two decades, an equally exciting fight will take place in San Diego – the battle for WBO world title lightweight Denis Berinchik – Emmanuel Navarrete.

Not only will Berinchyk again need to step out of the shadow of his star partners on the Ukrainian Olympic team, but he also has an extremely dangerous and unpleasant opponent as his opponent. The 29-year-old Mexican Navarrete was a world champion in three weight categories, had 40 fights in the professional ring, of which he won 38 (31 ahead of schedule), lost one, and ended in a draw.

Navarrete has not lost for 34 fights in a row (33 wins and a draw). He is well-versed technically, like every Mexican, he loves and is ready to make exchanges, he is well prepared technically. In other words, if styles make fights, then this is exactly the case – Berinchik is also not averse to hacking and exchanging.

But still, there are several points that so far do not look in favor of the Ukrainian. The first is the location of the battle. Berinchyk will only be boxing outside of Ukraine for the fourth time and the first time in the USA. The second is the merits of Navarrete and the sympathy of the judges, who will definitely be on the side of the Mexican, who is striving for a title in the fourth category.

It will be very difficult to outbox Navarrete. But trying to “interrupt” – it seems that you can try. Berinchyk is truly a sportingly reckless fighter, who is motivated by the aggression of the public and the strength of his opponent. He loves and looks for a fight – and this is exactly what can work. But there is no doubt that the Berinchyk – Navarrete fight should turn out to be bright. Denis spent 3,186 days from the moment of his debut in the professional ring towards the champion title and a better opponent and place to take the title and declare himself at the world level could not be found.
