Flick leads the race to become Barcelona’s new head coach

Former coach of Bayern and the German national team Hans-Dieter Flick tops the shortlist of candidates for the position of new head coach Barcelona.

The German was previously listed alongside Mexican Rafael Marquez and Italian Roberto De Zerbi (Shakhtar’s ex-coach), but it seems he is currently the favorite to take charge of the Blaugranas in case the club does part ways with Xavi.

Xavi announced in January that he would leave Barcelona at the end of the season. The club’s management remained optimistic that the coach could be convinced. The manager also needs to have basic transfer spending on reinforcements during the off-season.

In March it was reported that Laporta had held preliminary talks with Flick. However, subsequently there was progress in relations between the club and Xavi: the parties began to agree on a new contract. It is noteworthy that the coach changed his mind precisely after a personal meeting with the president.

However, the situation soon changed again. Xavi’s interview, where the coach announced a “weak financial situation,” infuriated Laporta, who decided to fire the coach.

Barcelona is in second place in the La Liga standings. In the final round of the Spanish Championship, Xavi’s team will play against Sevilla on May 26.
