Ternopil will miss the upcoming season
President of the Basketball Federation of Ukraine (FBU) Mikhail Brodsky revealed the details of the new national championship. According to him, the FBU plans to use the bubble format that was used during the coronavirus pandemic.
“We are now starting to work with clubs who, under these conditions, can play in the Ukrainian championship. We will definitely hold the championship of Ukraine. We will have two championships – Division A-Superliga and Division B, among men and women.”
“We used to have three championships, now we will have two. We considered several formats. There was even an idea to start everyone in one league, and in the second part to divide into divisions, but they decided that it would be better to divide the season into two leagues according to the clubs’ capabilities. We will play without fans, but with mandatory online and TV broadcasts and appropriate media coverage.”
“Games will be played in safe places with shelter. The tours will be held in a kind of bubbles that we have already gone through under quarantine, that is, the clubs will gather in one place where they will hold a series of matches, each tour will be held once every two weeks. I think there will be about 8-10 teams in each league, we will start at the end of October.”
“I want to note that the clubs that will play abroad must definitely play in the Ukrainian championship. Otherwise, this is not a Ukrainian club. Competition rules are currently being developed. All of them will be coordinated with the championship clubs and the FBU executive committee.”
“If we talk about men’s clubs, then, apart from Prometheus and Budivelnik, the teams do not have powerful sponsors or owners. I will help the Cherkasy Mavpas little by little, we have a sponsorship fist in Kyiv-Basket, we have an ambitious Dnipro, we are counting on Rivne, Volyn and Zhytomyr, plus a few more teams, we have our strong activists in Zaporizhia and Yuzhny – Division A is looming somewhere like this now – Superleague, there may be 10 teams. Unfortunately, Ternopil will miss the season. The rest of the clubs will play in the “B” division.
The 2021-22 season in the Super League was stopped due to a full-scale Russian invasion in February at the regular season stage. The winners at the end of the season were not awarded.
The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine in June approved the decision to resume sports competitions in Ukraine under martial law.
Earlier, FBU Secretary General Volodymyr Drabikovsky said that the new basketball season in Ukraine could start in October in an unusual format.
