Villarreal split with 41-year-old Reina

Over almost a quarter of a century of his career, Pepe played for 8 clubs in four top championships, became a world champion and twice a European champion.

Villarreal officially announced his separation from the veteran goalkeeper Pepe Reina.

The Spaniard returned to the Levantine club in the summer of 2022. He previously played for Villarreal between 2002 and 2005. Pepe also played in Barcelona, Liverpool, Napoli, Bayern, Milan, Aston Villa and Lazio during his career.

He also played 36 matches for the Spanish national team (2005 – 2018), in which he took part in four World Championships (including the victorious 2010) and two European Championships (both victorious for Furia Roja). Pepe will turn 42 in August, but he has not yet announced his plans to retire.

In the second half of the 2022/23 season, Pepe was the main goalkeeper for the Yellow Submarine. Last summer, the club extended the veteran’s contract for another year. However, Reina played little last season – mainly in the Europa League. In total he played 12 matches, only three of them were clean sheets.

Villarreal finished eighth in La Liga at the end of the 2023/24 season and did not qualify for European competition. In the Europa League, Reina’s team reached the 1/8 finals, where they lost to Marseille (0:4, 3:1).
