One of the leaders of the sensational Catalan team has signed a five-year contract with the German champions
Bayer officially announced the signing of the midfielder Aleisha Garcia from Girona. The newcomer entered into a contract with the Pharmacists until June 30, 2029.
It was previously reported that the parties reached a verbal agreement on a transfer for 18 million euros. At the same time, Bayer coach Xabi Alonso played a key role during the negotiations.
Garcia, 26, captained Girona, making 40 appearances across all competitions in the club’s 2023/24 season. He has three goals and six assists.
The Catalan club, which includes Ukrainians Artem Dovbik and Viktor Tsygankov, had a phenomenal season, took third place and qualified for the Champions League for the first time in history.
At the end of the campaign, Garcia was included in La Liga’s Team of the Season (along with Dovbik), and, along with nine other candidates, was nominated for the 2023/24 Player of the Season award, but in the end the prize went to Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham.
Aleix was included by Spain head coach Luis De la Fuente in the preliminary squad for the 2024 European Championship, but Furia Roja Garcia was not included in the final list of 26 players.
Bayer and Xabi Alonso completed the “golden double”, triumphing in the Bundesliga and the German Cup. The pharmacists managed to interrupt Bayern’s 11-year hegemony in the German championship.
