The Ukrainian also shared his expectations for the future second fight between Alexander and Tyson Fury
Former world light heavyweight champion Alexander Gvozdyk hopes that his fight with the holder of the “interim” WBC super middleweight title David Benavidez the absolute world heavyweight champion will visit Alexander Usik.
“Usyk will probably come to the fight to support me. He’s busy filming a movie with ‘The Rock’ Johnson in Canada, but he told me that if he has time, obviously he’ll fly out here and support me.”
“We met recently, we just remembered the old school atmosphere, especially from the Olympics, when we spent a lot of time together in the same room, with the same team. Now we have a different life, but we still keep in touch, and personal meetings are always warm and super-pleasant.”
“Tyson Fury published, or rather someone else, that he was completely collapsed in some bar where people were carrying him. And so he recorded a video in which he said: “I will be in better shape.” It’s up to Fury because Usyk will be ready. Believe me. I know this guy. He will become even better.”
“What can Fury show? I’ve heard – and I mean rumored – that when under psychological stress, Fury usually resorts to drugs or large amounts of alcohol. Let’s see how he handles it this time. If he’s in better shape, we’ll see a better fight.”
Let us remind you that Alexander Usik is preparing for his second fight with former WBC world champion Tyson Fury. The Briton published a training video in which he said that he would reclaim the throne of the best heavyweight fighter.
The fight between Gvozdyk and Benavidez for the vacant WBC interim light heavyweight title will take place on the night of June 15-16, approximately at 5:00 Kyiv time.
The event will be hosted by Las Vegas, with a boxing evening scheduled at the Grand Garden Arena. The fight between Alexander and David will take place on the undercard of the confrontation between WBA champion Gervonta Davis and Frank Martin.
Benavidez, 27, fought his last fight in November 2023. David defeated Demetrius Andrade, who refused to continue the fight after the sixth round. David spent his last few fights in the super middleweight division (up to 168 pounds or 76.2 kg). For the fight with Gvozdyk, he moves up to the light heavyweight category (up to 175 pounds or 79.4 kg).
Gvozdyk knocked out Brazilian boxer Isaac Rodriguez in his last fight. This is Alexander’s third victory after resuming his career. Prior to this, the Ukrainian knocked out Latvian boxer Richards Bolotniks in the 6th round.
