The American ended the fight with a hand injury
WBC interim light heavyweight belt holder David Benavidez stated that he considers his last opponent to be Ukrainian Alexandra Gvozdika one of the best fighters the American has fought.
“This dude is good. He’s consistent. He’s one of the best I’ve fought in my entire career,” David said.
“My strength was still good, but by the third round my arm was already damaged. Then I kept trying to use my right hand, but I had problems with that too.”
“I dominated the fight. Even when my arm hurt, I continued to hurt him. I continued to strike him to the body at the beginning of the fight, but I worked with my left hand slightly open. There was little I could do. I feel like that really impacts that weight.”
Let us remind you that Benavidez inflicted the second defeat on Gvozdyk in his professional career. In the fight for the vacant WBC interim light heavyweight title, which took place in Las Vegas at the Grand Garden Arena, the American won by unanimous decision.
After the fight, the American said that he wanted to move down to second middleweight. Benavidez wants to fight Saul Alvarez or another opponent for the championship title.
The 37-year-old Gvozdyk suffered his first defeat since his return to the ring in February 2023. Earlier, in 2020, the Ukrainian ended his career, but then decided to return to professional boxing. From 2016 to 2019, he held the WBC light heavyweight title. In 2012, Alexander became the bronze medalist of the Olympics.
