The Social Media Protection Service (SMPS), launched ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, recorded and masked 2.6 million offensive comments on social media against football players and teams, according to the website of the International Football Federation (FIFA ).
During this period, SMPS analyzed 30 million posts and comments relating to 160 teams and almost four thousand football players. The most offensive content (30,883 cases in total) was reported to media platforms, leading to real action, including account suspension.
“On the occasion of the International Day Against Hate Speech, I would like to reiterate that FIFA will always oppose hatred being a part of football. The social media watchdog is an important tool we can use in the fight against hatred in our sport,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino. “We have already seen the effectiveness of this system at FIFA tournaments, and it makes sense that we have made it available to all 211 FIFA member associations.
