The first European title for an 18-year-old athlete at senior level
Ukrainian swimmer Alexander Zheltyakov conquered gold at a distance of 200 m backstroke European Championship 2024 in water sports.
The Ukrainian passed the first cutoff with sixth result, and was in the top three after half the distance. At the very end, Alexander was 0.03 seconds ahead of the Greek swimmer Apostolos Siskos.
The 18-year-old athlete won gold at the European Championships for the first time at the adult level. Previously, Alexander won the world and European junior titles.
Zheltyakov’s result (1:55.39 minutes) is a new national record for Ukraine. Alexander improved his previous achievement by 0.4 seconds.
The gold medal was the first for Ukraine in history in the 200 m backstroke. This is also the first gold in backstroke for our country in 24 years.
Zheltyakov’s medal became the fourth for Ukraine at Euro 2024 in aquatics and the first in swimming. Previously, Ukrainians won three awards in diving.
The 2024 European Aquatics Championships is taking place in Belgrade, Serbia. The competition ends on June 23.
