Jovic saved Stojkovic’s team from an early exit from the tournament
Slovenia in a hot Balkan confrontation, she super-dramatically missed victory over Serbia in the second round European Championship 2024 – 1:1.
Despite the formal status of an underdog, the Slovenian team looked more convincing in the first half hour – they attacked and created chances. Then the Serbs evened out the game and created something in front of the opponents’ goal. And yet, Matjaz Kek’s team missed their best chance – Timi Elsnik hit the post, Benmin Sheshko was almost inaccurate in finishing.
After the break the swing continued. Serbia, which lost to England in the first round, went for the victory and ran into a counterattack. It was dispersed by wingback Jean Karnicnik – and he himself finished it after Elshnik’s cross.
Dragan Stojkovic released all possible attacking players, but Jan Oblak and company successfully contained the opponent’s attacks. Until the last seconds, when another corner brought a dramatic outcome. The same Karnicnik did not keep track of Luka Jovic, and the Milan forward became the savior of the nation.
Slovenia drew 1:1 for the second time in a row. Serbia, having scored the first goal and scored the first point, retains its chances for the playoffs after two rounds. The head-on will be its confrontation with Denmark in the third round.
Today in this group the Danes will play against England, kick-off at 19:00.
